Jeanette MacDonald: The Irving Stone Letters
Published in Paperback by Bell Harbour Press (20 November, 2002)
Author: Sharon Rich
Average review score:

The REAL Jeanette MacDonald reveals herself--great read!
Loved it! A great collection of hand-written letters by MGM's musical songbird, before she was a star. Lively, entertaining, and she sure wasn't a boring prude like some others have made her out to be. Ms. Rich wisely keeps the annotations to a minimum, since Naughty Marietta tells it like it was in her own words. I particularly enjoyed MacDonald's Broadway and Hollywood gossip from the good old days! Lots of good dish.

John Wesley's Life & Ethics

John Wesley Revisited
Review of John Wesley's "Life and Ethics"  by Ronald H. Stone After thirty years of teaching at a Presbyterian Seminary,  Professor Ronald Stone has returned to his Methodist roots with his latest book. Ronald grew up in Dakota City, Iowa and learned about the Christian faith at the Humboldt Methodist Church.  He went to Morningside College and served the Methodist Church at Salix.  Later he attended Union Seminary, Columbia, and Oxford.   He is now an active member of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After spending a Sabbatical at Oxford in 1999 studying the works of John Wesley, Ronald wrote his book on Wesley's social ethic.  While the book is intended primarily for  United Methodist Pastors and scholars, United Methodist lay people who read the book will  learn a great deal about the life of John Wesley, the historical context in which he lived and his theology and ethics.  The book discusses Wesley's views on war, the slave trade, women, marriage, economics, social work, power, freedom, poverty and wealth and going on to perfection. Throughout the book Stone compares  Wesley's thought to the ethics of the Niebuhrs  Tillich, and liberation theology. In his conclusion Stone writes "We learn... from Wesley there is no adequate Christian self disengaged from others in religious society and there is no adequate Christian character not involved in the social reform of its day."   The paperback book is published by Abingdon Press and is available at Cokesbury [...]. This review was written by Rev. Hugh R. Stone, Pastor of the Waukee United Methodist Church.

The Kensington Rune-Stone: Authentic & Important (Edward Sapir Monograph Series in Language, Culture & Cognition, Vol 19)
Published in Hardcover by Jupiter Pr (May, 1995)
Author: Robert A. Hall
Average review score:

At last, a linguist's critique of the Kensington Rune-stone!
The book's author served as Cornell University's Professor Emeritus of Linquistics, so he is far from a fad-flaring fringe-fan of Viking rune-stones. Rather, Professor Hall has, in a very readable-yet-scholarly manner, argued the linguistic and archaeological evidence (corroborated by forensic insights) for the historic authenticity of the Kensington Rune-Stone, with a very helpful interlinear translation, followed by a word-by-word analytical commentary, especially buttressed by contemporary political history events of relevance, all the while using logic and historic philology for analysis. It is a shame that the detractors of the Kensington Rune-stone don't make a good-faith effort to reply to Hall's evidence and logic. To date I have seen no serious scholarship to refute Hall's work in this extreming interesting area of American Viking history. I say that as a viking history lecturer with a history-oriented doctorate that included a minor in European studies, as the author of a few publications on Viking history, as a past Historian for a chapter of the Sons of Norway, and after having served as a Icelandic saga analyst/Viking history lecturer abroad (involving research-related travels to viking history locations in 7 different countries). Sadly, many researchers today judge events in history by a "uniformitarian" approach, e.g., assuming that the "wine-berries" (grapes) of Vinland must match growth conditions under today's climate, as opposed to researching what a place's climate was like 1000 years ago, e.g., by noticing that the Norman Domesday Book of 1086 recorded at least 38 vineyards in England. Hall provides REAL research.

King James Version Key Word Bible Studies on Salvation
Published in Paperback by AMG Publishers (January, 2001)
Authors: Living Stone and AMG Publishers
Average review score:

Bible Salvation Explained Word by Word!
This book is arranged in a twelve lesson format, with each lesson covering a Bible word used in relation to Salvation. True to AMG's other books, shades of meaning from the original Hebrew and Greek are explained to reveal deeper meanings and concepts. Some examples of Bible words covered are: Belief, Reconciliation, Grace, and Forgiveness. Each of the word lessons covers relevant passages from the Bible and asks questions concerning these passages; as such, the reader is challenged to explore what the Bible reveals about Salvation by comparing multiple passages of Scripture. Overall, an excellent book for anyone wanting to understand more about Biblical salvation without any denominational or sectarian bias.

The Seamstress: At the ceremony where old needles,/bodies broken in service,/are buried in the soft white tofu pillow/I think suddenly of my mother's mother/first in the ship from Ludsk/then in the tenement on the Lower East Side/where she sat over her sewing machine/pulling each piece of fabric/mute through its rusted tongue./For Years I haven't thought of her/until now, when this prayer--/an unlikely Buddhist mass--/stitches up the run in that old stocking Time/here in Tokyo, my Ellis Island of the mind. excellent
This book is one of a series for a child with advance attitude for nature and the science of animals, in this case: Australia. These books, as a series, are a collector item for the complete set of six (6) books. The average child will leave this book on the shelf as it is beyond his level, thus this book is excellent for the child whose needs goes far beyond what the environment can offer. The photographs are of the highest quality, and any one picture would rate an award at just about any show of photograph prints.
